Most advice on how to improve Etsy SEO stays general: pick good keywords, take good photos, fill your tags. All true, and none of it tells you what is wrong with the listing in front of you. The faster route is an audit: go through one listing part by part, note what falls short and fix the costliest gaps first.

This guide gives you a 10-minute procedure, a checklist of what good looks like, a rule for which fixes come first, a worked example on a print-on-demand mug and a routine for re-checking after you edit. It stays on the audit. For the reasons behind ranking, read how the Etsy algorithm works.

Pick one listing and write down its main phrase

Start where a fix pays back fastest: your best seller, where small gains add up; a listing with views but no sales, where something on the page turns buyers away; or a listing with almost no views after a month. Audit one at a time.

Open the listing editor, the live listing and Etsy Stats for the last 30 days. Then write down the main search you want this listing to be found for. Every check below is measured against that phrase.

The 10-minute Etsy listing audit

Work in this order. Note problems as you go but do not fix them yet, so you can rank them before you touch anything.

  1. Title (1 minute). Read the first 40 characters. Do they say what the item is, in words a buyer would type?
  2. Tag count and form (2 minutes). Count the filled slots out of 13 and mark single words, near copies and anything untrue.
  3. Tag demand (2 minutes). Look up each tag and note which have no buyers and which are too crowded to reach.
  4. Description opening (1 minute). Read the first sentence only. Does it name the item?
  5. Photos and video (2 minutes). Count the photos, judge the first one as a thumbnail and note whether there is a video.
  6. Attributes, materials and section (1 minute). Scroll the editor for empty fields that apply.
  7. Sort your notes (1 minute). Put each problem under fix now, fix next or polish, using the priorities below.

To skip the manual pass, paste the listing link into the free Etsy listing checker. It runs these checks in about 10 seconds, grades the listing from A to F and gives a fix for every lost point, then AI drafts a new title, 13 tags and a description opening. It reads any active listing, so you can check a best seller in your niche too and compare.

The Etsy SEO checklist: what good looks like

Use this table as the yardstick. The notes after it cover the judgement calls.

Title

Two things usually go wrong: the lead phrase hides behind a design name, or one keyword repeats until the title reads like a list. The Etsy title checker grades a pasted title from A to F, flags length, repeats, capitals and symbols, and confirms your main phrase sits in the first 40 characters. If the title needs a rewrite rather than a trim, follow the titles and tags checklist.

The 13 tags

Empty slots are a common gap and the cheapest to close. Then look for wasted slots: lone words such as mug, the same tag twice and phrases over 20 characters. The Etsy tag checker catches all of these in your browser, with no daily cap. Check near copies by eye: book lover mug and book lovers mug reach the same buyers.

Tag demand and competition

A tag can pass every format check and still do nothing. Etsy does not publish search volume, so no tool shows exact searches. The Etsy keyword research tool reads demand for a phrase from the views, favorites and sales of its listings and scores competition and opportunity from 0 to 100. The listing checker does this for all your tags at once, with estimated 30-day sales and competing listings per tag, plus the tags that the 10 best sellers for your main phrase use and you lack.

Aim for a mix: one or two broad, crowded phrases that describe the item, and narrower phrases with real sales and reachable competition for the rest. Replace tags with no tracked sales first.

Description opening

Audit only the start. The first lines are what shoppers see before they expand the description, and Google often shows them under the listing in its results. Good is one plain sentence that names the item the way people search, with its main detail. Move the shop greeting and policy notes further down.

Photos and video

Count first: fewer than five photos is the gap to close before anything else here. Then judge the first photo at thumbnail size. Each extra photo should answer a different question about scale, color, size or what arrives, so four mockups from one angle count as one. For a full shot list, see the guide to print-on-demand product photos. At the time of writing, Etsy listing videos run 5 to 15 seconds and play without sound; confirm the rules in the Etsy Help Center.

Attributes, materials and section

Etsy reads your category and attributes when it matches listings to searches, and shoppers use attributes as filters, so an empty color or occasion field can keep the listing out of a filtered search. Set every attribute that is true, list the materials and put the listing in a shop section.

Which fixes to make first

Etsy SEO optimization advice often treats every fix as equal. Sort yours by one rule: what is missing costs more than what is imperfect. An empty tag slot is a search the listing cannot appear for, and a three-photo listing loses buyers who already found it. A title a little longer than needed costs very little.

  • Fix now: gaps. Empty tag slots, fewer than five photos, a weak first photo, empty attributes and tags with no tracked sales.
  • Fix next: mismatches. A title that does not lead with the item, tags that describe a different style and a description that opens with a greeting.
  • Then: wasted slots. Single-word tags, near copies and a set made mostly of crowded phrases.
  • Polish last. A slightly long title, a word used twice and a missing video on a listing that already sells.

Fill gaps in one go, since they only add ways to be found and bought. If the listing already sells, change the title on its own and wait a week or two, so you can tell whether it helped.

Worked example: auditing a print-on-demand mug

This is an example. The listing and every number in it are made up to show the audit in action.

A seller lists an 11 oz mug with the quote Just One More Chapter. After a month it gets a trickle of views and no sales. The title reads Book Lover Mug Book Mug Bookish Gift Reading Mug Book Lover Gift Librarian Mug Book Club Gift Bookworm Mug Book Lover Coffee Mug. The nine tags are book lover, mug, book mug, book lover mug, bookish, gift for reader, reading, book lovers mug and bookworm. There are four front-on mockups, no video, no occasion or color attribute and no section, and the description opens with Welcome to my shop!

The tag data changes the plan. Book lover mug sells well but scores 94 for competition and 6 for opportunity, while bookish mug shows steady sales at 41 and 58, so bookish mug becomes the lead phrase. Four of the ten best sellers for book lover mug also use book club gift, which the listing lacks.

The new title is Bookish Mug, Just One More Chapter Quote, Book Lover Gift, Funny Reading Coffee Cup, 11 oz Ceramic. The 13 tags are bookish mug, book lover mug, book lover gift, funny reading mug, gift for readers, book club gift, librarian gift, bookworm gift, one more chapter, reading coffee cup, bibliophile gift, book nerd mug and reader birthday gift. Book lover mug stays on purpose, because it describes the item exactly. The seller skipped a suggested dark academia gift tag, since the design is not in that style.

How to re-check after you edit

  • The next day: confirm the fixes. Run the link through the Etsy listing checker again and make sure the grade moved and nothing new broke. A listing checked in the last 6 hours opens from the saved result, so wait a day to see your edits.
  • After two weeks: judge the results. In Etsy Stats, compare views, visits and orders over the two weeks before and after the edit, and look for your new tags among the search terms that brought visitors. Holidays move these numbers too, so compare like with like.

Etsy listing optimization is a habit, not a one-off. When one listing is done, the Etsy shop audit reads up to 100 active listings, scores the whole shop and ranks the 10 listings with the most problems. Anyone sees the score and the three biggest problems; the full list comes with a free account. Work down it one listing a day.

FAQ

How do I improve my Etsy SEO?

Audit one listing at a time and fix gaps first: fill all 13 tags with phrases buyers use, lead the title with the item, open the description with a sentence that names it, add photos that each answer a different question and set every attribute that applies.

Is there a free Etsy SEO checker?

Yes. The Etsy listing checker grades a live listing from A to F, checks each tag against tracked sales and competition, and writes a suggested title, 13 tags and description opening. You get 3 free checks a day without an account and 10 with a free account.

How long do Etsy SEO changes take to work?

Edits appear as soon as you save, but views and sales take longer to respond, with no fixed timeline. Give a change a week or two, then compare equal periods before and after in Etsy Stats.

Does Etsy show search volume for keywords?

No. Etsy does not publish search volume. Research tools, including ours, estimate demand from signals on Etsy listings such as views, favorites and sales. Use the numbers to compare phrases, not as an exact count of searches.
