Most sellers name their shop in a hurry. Etsy asks for a name partway through setup, the first three ideas are taken, and you settle on whatever gets past the box. Months later you are printing labels around a name that is hard to spell, tied to one product or one letter away from someone else's shop.

This guide gives you Etsy shop name ideas in six styles, the rules Etsy applies to every name, the tests a good name passes, and how to check if an Etsy shop name is available before you commit. It ends with a shortlist process and a worked example of a candle maker going from 20 ideas to one.

Etsy shop name rules to know first

At the time of writing (2026), Etsy accepts a shop name only if it meets these rules:

  • 4 to 20 characters. Every letter and number counts.
  • Letters and numbers only. No spaces, apostrophes, hyphens or ampersands. Mama's Candles becomes MamasCandles, and Salt & Pine becomes SaltAndPine.
  • Capitals are allowed. Use them to mark word breaks: OakHollowPrints reads far better than oakhollowprints. Treat capitals as styling, not as a way to make a taken name different.
  • One shop per name. If another shop holds a name, you cannot have it.

You can rename later from your shop settings in Shop Manager, but your shop's web address changes with the name, and your packaging and social bios have to follow. Confirm the current rules in the Etsy Help Center.

Six styles of Etsy shop name ideas

Most good Etsy shop names fall into one of six styles. The examples only illustrate each style; we have not checked whether they are free.

Descriptive

The name says what you sell: TeacherTeeShop, SoyCandleCorner. Buyers know what to expect, but the product word fences you in. Add nurse mugs next spring and TeacherTeeShop looks wrong.

Maker-style

A distinctive word plus Studio, Co, Works, Press or Goods: HarborLaneStudio, BirchPressCo. The suffix makes a small shop sound settled and gives you a fallback when the bare word is taken.

Blends

Two words joined, often with And: InkAndOat, WickAndWillow. Blends stick because they put a small picture in the buyer's head. Read the joined version in lowercase to check the words do not run together into something odd.

Invented words

A made-up word or a real one bent slightly: Lumora, Kindlewick. These are the most likely to be free on Etsy and on social platforms, but they say nothing about what you sell, so your shop title and photos have to explain it.

Alliteration

Repeated sounds are easy to recall: PeachyPaperPress, MossyMugMarket. They are fun to say, which helps word of mouth, but can tip into cute, and three-word versions run close to 20 characters.

Place and personal words

A local landmark, a family nickname or a pet: SaltMarshPrints, BiscuitAndBean. They give you a story and are hard to copy. Think twice before using your full legal name if you value privacy.

To skip the blank page, the Etsy shop name generator has two modes. Quick ideas runs in your browser with no limit and turns one or two seed words into 40+ names. AI names takes what you sell, a feel such as cozy or playful, and an optional word for every second name, then returns 20 names with a reason for each: 5 runs a day without an account, 30 with a free account. Both modes follow Etsy's rules.

What makes a good Etsy shop name

  • It survives being said out loud. If you have to spell or explain it every time, each recommendation gets harder.
  • Someone can spell it from memory. Tell a friend the name, wait an hour, then ask them to type it. Doubled letters and creative spellings such as Kandles fail most often.
  • It has room to grow. Print-on-demand shops tend to spread from shirts to mugs to posters. Leave the product word out, or use a broad one like Prints or Goods.
  • It fits small spaces. The name has to work on a sticker, a packing slip and a social handle. Shorter names are easier to read at small sizes.
  • It sounds like the shop. Gothic art prints and baby shower favors should not share a tone.

Does the shop name help Etsy SEO?

Less than many sellers hope. Shoppers mostly find items through listing titles, tags, categories and attributes, so that is where your keywords belong. The shop name mainly helps people who already know you and search for your shop by name. To say in words what you sell, use your shop title, the short line under your name on your shop page.

Etsy shop names to stay away from

  • Brands, characters and celebrities. A name built on a sports team, a cartoon, a toy brand or a famous person invites an infringement complaint and a forced rename after you have earned reviews. Read Etsy's intellectual property policy before you lean on anyone else's name.
  • Near copies of a known shop. If a popular shop is called SunnyLoom, a name like SunnyLoomCo or SunyLoom confuses buyers and looks like you are borrowing its reputation, even if Etsy accepts it.
  • Registered words in your niche. Some ordinary words are trademarks for certain products. Search your country's trademark database before you print anything; in the US, the USPTO offers a free search.
  • Names that date quickly. A meme, a year such as Tees2026 or a trend word goes stale before your shop does.
  • Digits posing as letters. A 0 for an O or a 1 for an I gets around a taken name but is almost impossible to type from memory.

How to check if an Etsy shop name is available

On Etsy

The most reliable Etsy shop name checker is Etsy's own shop name field, during setup or when you rename from your shop settings. For a quick filter, type etsy.com/shop/ plus the name into your browser: if a shop page opens, the name is taken. A missing page does not prove it is free, because Etsy can keep holding the names of closed shops.

The AI mode of the shop name generator runs a first pass on a whole list. Each name comes back marked Taken on Etsy when an open shop already uses it, or Not found on Etsy when none does. Not found means likely free, not guaranteed, so confirm your favorite in Etsy's field.

Social handles and a domain

Check Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and any platform you plan to use. If one is taken, a small addition used the same way everywhere, such as shop on the end, is fine. Then look up the .com at a domain registrar. If an active business with the same name owns it, the name will be hard to make your own.

A shortlist-and-test process

  1. Write down your raw material. What you sell, what you might add within a year, three words for the feel and any personal words. Still choosing what to sell? The Etsy niche finder lists phrases with good opportunity and low competition, and our guide to finding a profitable Etsy niche walks through the checks.
  2. Generate 20 to 40 ideas. Mix your own with generator output. Do not judge yet.
  3. Cut the rule-breakers. Anything over 20 characters, anything that needs a symbol, and anything that leans on a brand, character, celebrity or another shop.
  4. Run the phone test. Say each name to someone without showing it, ask them to type it, and keep the ones they get right. Cut to five.
  5. Check availability for the five. Etsy first, since you cannot work around it, then social platforms, then a domain.
  6. Mock up the top two or three. Put each on a label and a profile picture, look at them small, then sleep on it.
  7. Claim the winner everywhere on the same day. Set it on Etsy, register the handles and buy the domain if you want it.

Worked example: a candle maker goes from 20 ideas to one

This is an example. The shop, names and results are made up to show the process; we have not checked whether these names are free.

Say you pour woodsy soy candles and plan to add wax melts and room sprays next year. You want a cozy feel, and you like the word cedar.

20 ideas. You run AI names in the Etsy store name generator with "hand-poured soy candles, woodsy scents", the cozy feel and cedar as the extra word. Six of the 20 are marked Taken on Etsy, leaving 14.

14 to 8. Four are built on candle words, such as CedarWickCandles, which will not fit room sprays. Two more are close to 20 characters and crowd a label.

8 to 3. You read the eight to a friend over the phone. They misspell three and shrug at two that sound like every other candle shop. The finalists: CedarHollowCo (13 characters), EmberAndPine (12) and Hollowlight (11).

3 to 1. Etsy's shop name field accepts all three. On Instagram, Hollowlight belongs to an active photography account, and the .com for CedarHollow is used by a cabin rental business. EmberAndPine clears every check and still fits once wax melts arrive, so you set it on Etsy that evening.

The winner is not the cleverest name on the list. It is the one buyers can say, spell and find again.

After you choose: put the name to work

Use the same name on Etsy, your handles and your packaging, write a shop title that says plainly what you sell, and get your first listings up. Our guide on how to sell on Etsy covers the steps after naming. Once the shop has been running a while, the Etsy shop audit scores it out of 100, flags problems across up to 100 listings and suggests a better shop title.

FAQ

How do I check if an Etsy shop name is available?

Type it into the shop name field during setup, or in your shop settings if you already have a shop. Etsy tells you on the spot. A missing shop page at etsy.com/shop/ does not guarantee the name is free, because closed shops can still hold their names.

Can I change my Etsy shop name later?

Yes, from your shop settings in Shop Manager. Your shop's web address changes with it, so update your links and packaging, and check the Etsy Help Center for any current limits.

What are the Etsy shop name rules?

A shop name must be 4 to 20 characters, letters and numbers only, with no spaces or symbols, and not already used by another shop. Capitals are allowed, so most shops use them to show word breaks.

Should I put keywords in my Etsy shop name?

Only if the word fits your brand anyway. Shoppers mostly find items through listing titles, tags and categories, so a keyword in the shop name adds little. A memorable name helps more when buyers come back looking for you.
