About the Amazon Negative Keywords Finder

What are negative keywords on Amazon?

A negative keyword tells Amazon which shopping searches your Sponsored Products ads should stay away from. In Amazon's words, negative targeting helps you "exclude the keywords, products or brands you don't want your ads associated with". It works in automatic and manual campaigns, and you can set it for a whole campaign or for single ad groups. Every click on a search that will never buy your product is wasted, so a short list of Amazon negative keywords keeps your budget on the searches that can sell.

Negative exact vs negative phrase

At the time of writing (2026), Amazon recommends phrase or exact match for negative keywords:

  • Negative exact: your ads stop showing for that search and close variations of it. Use it to drop one search, such as "jewelry box for teen girls", and keep the longer searches around it.
  • Negative phrase: your ads stop showing for any search that contains the phrase or close variations of it. It reaches further, so keep it for words that never fit what you sell.

How this tool finds negative keyword candidates

Most advice on how to find negative keywords for Amazon FBA starts with your own search term report, which fills up only after you pay for clicks. This tool starts earlier, with Amazon's data for the whole niche: Amazon Opportunity Explorer lists every search term in a niche with its searches, click share, sales and conversion for the last 30 days. Pick a niche and the tool sorts its terms into three groups:

  • Different product: 50 or more searches and no product word from the niche's name. Words for the buyer, such as women or kids, do not count, and jewellery counts as jewelry. Suggested as negative phrase.
  • Clicks but no sales: 100 or more searches that drew clicks and no sale in 30 days. Suggested as negative exact.
  • Converts far under the niche: 300 or more searches and a conversion under 35% of the niche's median. Suggested as negative exact, and left unticked.

These are candidates, not orders. A search with no product word from the niche's name can still be your product under another name, and a term with no sales across the niche can be exactly what you sell. Keep only the terms that do not describe your product: blocking a search that fits it costs you sales, not only clicks. To see every search term in the niche, open it in the Amazon Keyword Research Tool.

How to add negative keywords in Campaign Manager

At the time of writing (2026), Amazon's guides describe these steps:

  1. Open Campaign Manager (some newer Amazon guides call the console Amazon Ads Agent) and click the name of the campaign.
  2. Go to its Negative keywords tab to cover the whole campaign, or click an ad group and open its Negative targeting tab.
  3. Click Add keyword and add your terms as negative exact or negative phrase. A new campaign has a Negative keyword targeting section in the Create campaign window.

Amazon suggests judging a keyword after it has had at least 20 clicks before you make it negative, and letting negatives run for two weeks or more before you change course. A negative can always be removed. Then watch your own search term report, which lists the searches that got at least one click on your ad. Before you pay for clicks at all, check that the listing itself covers the right searches with the Amazon Listing Optimization Tool.

How to read the results

Start typing your product and pick its Amazon niche from the list, such as "jewelry boxes for women". You can also type a product phrase and the tool uses the closest niche. You then get:

  1. The niche: its name, the week of the data, its searches and the median conversion of its search terms that sold.
  2. Three groups of candidates: different product, clicks but no sales, and converts far under the niche. Each term shows its searches, click share, sales and conversion, with a tick.
  3. Your list: the ticked terms, one per line, as suggested (phrase for different products, exact for the rest), all exact or all phrase, ready to copy. Paid plans can also export every candidate as a CSV file.

Go through each group, untick every term that describes your product, then copy the list into your campaign. Each search uses one of your daily lookups, shared by every research tool on the site: 3 a day without an account, 10 with a free account and more on paid plans. It uses no credits. A niche searched again within 24 hours opens from memory and costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

What are negative keywords on Amazon?
Searches you tell Amazon not to show your Sponsored Products ads for. You can add them to a whole campaign or to one ad group, as negative exact (that search and close variations) or negative phrase (any search that contains the phrase). They keep your ad budget away from shoppers who want something else.
Is this Amazon negative keywords tool free?
Yes. Each search uses one of your daily lookups, shared by every research tool on the site: 3 a day without an account, 10 with a free account and more on paid plans. It uses no credits. Copying the list is free; exporting the CSV needs a paid plan. A niche searched again within 24 hours costs nothing.
How do I find negative keywords for Amazon FBA?
Look in two places. This tool reads Amazon's data for your niche and lists searches that belong to another product, bring clicks without sales or convert far under the niche, so you can start before you spend. Once your ads run, your own search term report lists the searches that got a click on your ad. Amazon suggests judging a keyword after at least 20 clicks.
Should I use negative exact or negative phrase?
Negative exact blocks one search and its close variations; negative phrase blocks every search that contains the phrase. The tool suggests phrase for a different product, where the words themselves do not fit, and exact for searches that match your kind of product but do not sell. At the time of writing (2026), Amazon recommends phrase or exact match for negatives.
Why is a term for my product under Different product?
A term lands there when it shares no product word with the niche's name. Words for the buyer (women, girls, kids) do not count, spellings such as jewellery count as jewelry, and Spanish searches are never put there. It can still be what you sell under another name: untick it and keep only the terms that do not describe your product.
Why are the low conversion terms not ticked?
They still sell, only at under 35% of the niche's median conversion, and your listing may do better on them. Tick them only if your own search term report shows clicks without orders on them too.
Are these negative keywords from my own ads?
No. They come from Amazon Opportunity Explorer data for the whole niche, refreshed weekly for Amazon.com. The tool cannot see your campaigns, so check your own search term report before you add a term.
Can I remove a negative keyword later?
Yes. Amazon says adding negative targets is not permanent and you can always remove them, but it suggests letting negatives run for two weeks or more before you change your strategy.
