Type the shop name you want. The rules light up as you type, and Check searches Etsy for an open shop that already uses it.
The Etsy Shop Name Checker tells you in a few seconds whether the name you want can be yours. Whether you call it your shop name or your Etsy username, it is the word in your shop's address, etsy.com/shop/YourShopName, and the name buyers see. Type it, or paste a shop link, and the checker tests it against Etsy's rules as you type, then searches Etsy for an open shop that already uses it. When the name is taken, it shows you that shop and checks a few variations, so you have something to try next.
Etsy's shop name rules
At the time of writing (2026), Etsy's Help Center lists these requirements for a shop name:
4 to 20 characters in length.
No spaces or special characters, so letters and numbers only. Capital letters are fine, and many sellers use them to mark word breaks, as in PaperFoxStudio.
No profanity.
Not already in use by an existing Etsy member.
No infringement of someone else's trademark.
Etsy's trademark policy also keeps its own name out of shop names, so the checker flags any name that contains "Etsy". It tests the length, the characters and that word for you. Profanity and trademarks are judgment calls it leaves to you.
What "available" means
The checker can only see shops that are open. A result of Not found on Etsy, likely free means no open shop uses that exact name today, which is a good sign but not a promise. Etsy's help pages say that once a name has been used on an open shop, it cannot be used again, even after that shop closes, and that Etsy holds a name for a seller while they finish opening their shop. Closed shops do not show up in search, and a shop that is still being set up is not open yet, so neither can be seen from outside. Etsy decides when you type the name into its shop name field and save it, so treat a free result as your shortlist, not your final answer.
Before you open your shop, you can change the name as often as you like.
After you open, you can change it up to 5 times in Shop Manager, under Settings and then Your shop. Further changes need approval from Etsy Support.
Changing only the capitalization, or going back to a name you used before, does not count as a change.
Links to your old name redirect to the new one, other sellers cannot take your old name, and for 45 days an icon next to your shop name tells buyers it has changed.
How to pick a name
Say each idea out loud, then type it from memory: if you hesitate over the spelling, so will buyers. Keep it broad enough for the products you may add next year and short enough to fit on a label or a social profile. Check your shortlist here, then search the same names as trademarks and social handles before you print anything. How to read the results
Type a shop name, or paste a link such as etsy.com/shop/PaperFoxStudio or paperfoxstudio.etsy.com. As you type, three rules turn green or red: 4 to 20 characters, letters and numbers only, and no "Etsy". Spaces are dropped, because Etsy shop names have none. Press Check name and you get one of three answers:
Not found on Etsy, likely free: no open shop has that exact name, and the three rules are shown as passed. Copy the name or look it up on Etsy.
Taken: an open shop has it. You see that shop's icon, active listings, sales, the year it opened and whether it is on vacation, with a link to it. Up to 6 variations, such as the name plus Shop or Studio, are searched too, each with a one-click Check.
Not a valid Etsy shop name: the rules it breaks and why. Nothing is searched or counted, and when a fixed version passes, such as SaltAndPineCo for Salt & Pine Co, you can check that in one click.
Each check uses one of your daily lookups, the allowance shared by every research tool on the site: 3 a day without an account, 10 with a free account and more on paid plans. A name that breaks Etsy's rules is answered without a lookup, and checking the same name again within an hour is free. The address bar keeps the name, so you can bookmark or share a result.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if an Etsy shop name is available?
Type the name, or paste the shop's link, into the checker above and press Check name. It searches Etsy for an open shop with that exact name. For the final word, type it into the shop name field on Etsy, which also knows the names held by closed shops.
Is the Etsy shop name checker free?
Yes. Each check uses one of your daily lookups, shared by every research tool on the site: 3 a day without an account, 10 with a free account and more on paid plans. Names that break Etsy's rules, and repeat checks of the same name within an hour, cost nothing.
What are the rules for an Etsy shop name?
At the time of writing (2026), Etsy asks for 4 to 20 characters with no spaces or special characters, no profanity, a name no Etsy member already uses and no infringement of someone else's trademark. Etsy's trademark policy also keeps the word Etsy out of shop names.
Can I change my Etsy shop name?
Yes. Before your shop opens you can change it as often as you like. After it opens, Etsy's Help Center says you can change it up to 5 times in Shop Manager, under Settings and then Your shop; after that, a change needs approval from Etsy Support.
What happens to my old shop name and links after a change?
Links to the old name redirect to the new one, and other sellers cannot use your old name. For 45 days, an icon next to your shop name tells buyers that the name has changed.
Why does Etsy refuse a name that no open shop uses?
Once a name has been used on an open shop, Etsy does not let anyone use it again, even after that shop closes. Closed shops do not show up in search, so no checker can see them, which is why a free result says likely free.
Does the checker look at trademarks?
No. It checks Etsy's format rules and Etsy's open shops only. Etsy's rules say a shop name must not infringe someone else's trademark, so search your country's trademark register before you commit to a name.
What can I do when the name I want is taken?
Try one of the variations the checker lists, each already searched on Etsy, or add a word about what you make or where you are. Changing only the capital letters is not enough: Etsy counts that as the same name.
