Seasonal listings on Etsy run on a deadline that arrives well before the holiday. Gift shoppers browse and save favorites weeks ahead, a new listing needs time to collect views, and a print-on-demand order still has to be printed and shipped after the buyer pays. A Mother's Day mug that goes live the week before Mother's Day has already missed most of its selling window.

This calendar lays out the main US gift and shopping occasions for POD sellers month by month, with a start-listing date for each one. You will also see how those lead times are worked out, so you can adjust them for your own provider, and how to calculate your real last order date.

Why seasonal listings need a head start

Three clocks run before every holiday, and they add up:

  • Your clock. Designing a batch, making mockups and writing titles and tags takes a week or two if you are not rushing.
  • The listing's clock. A new listing needs a few weeks to gather views and favorites, and you need that time to fix a weak main photo or title before the peak.
  • The buyer's clock. Gift shoppers start looking well before they buy, and print-on-demand orders must be placed early enough to be made and shipped. The selling window ends on your last order date, not on the holiday.

Etsy does not publish a recommended lead time, and the numbers in this post are not Etsy statistics. They are a planning rule of thumb built from those three clocks.

The lead-time rule of thumb

Start from the event and work backwards:

  1. Find the last order date. Subtract your provider's production time, the shipping time and a few days of buffer from the event date. For US orders this usually lands one and a half to three weeks before the event.
  2. Add the listing's warm-up. Allow two to four weeks for the listing to settle in and for your fixes, before buyers arrive in numbers.
  3. Add the browsing window. Be live when shoppers start saving ideas, not when they start paying.

That gives three groups:

  • Big gift days such as Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Teacher Appreciation Week: start listing 7 to 8 weeks ahead.
  • Holidays where the item is worn on the day, such as St. Patrick's Day, July 4th and Thanksgiving: 5 to 7 weeks is usually enough, since buyers shop closer to the date.
  • Long seasons such as Halloween, Christmas, back to school and wedding season: 10 to 12 weeks, because shoppers start early, more sellers compete and carriers get busier in late November and December.

The Etsy holiday calendar on this site shows each event's date, the keywords that tend to rise before it and a list-by date six to eight weeks ahead, which it treats as the latest comfortable date. For the long seasons, start before it.

The month-by-month POD calendar

Dates are for the US. The start-listing column applies the rule of thumb above, so treat it as a planning target, not a rule from Etsy.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are not design themes. They are the weekend when shoppers who have browsed for weeks finally buy, so have your Christmas and winter listings live, tested and priced before it. The holiday calendar also covers smaller events such as Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Small Business Saturday, which bring fewer buyers but also fewer competing listings.

Exact dates move every year

Several occasions follow a rule rather than a fixed date, so check the dates each year instead of copying last year's plan:

  • Mother's Day is the second Sunday of May in the US: May 9 in 2027. Other countries use other dates; the UK's Mothering Sunday comes earlier in spring.
  • Father's Day is the third Sunday of June in the US.
  • Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November: November 26 in 2026 and November 25 in 2027. Black Friday and Cyber Monday move with it.
  • Teacher Appreciation Week usually falls in the first full week of May.
  • Graduation and back to school follow each school's or district's calendar, so demand spreads over several weeks.

Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, July 4th, Halloween and Christmas keep their dates, but the weekday changes, so check which weekend your last order date falls on.

Production plus shipping sets your last order date

For a print-on-demand seller, the holiday is not the deadline. The deadline is the last day a buyer can order and still receive the item in time, and it comes from two numbers you do not fully control: your provider's production time and the carrier's shipping time. Here is a worked example; the production and shipping times are made-up but realistic, so use your own provider's figures:

  • Event: Mother's Day, Sunday May 9, 2027. You want the gift to arrive by Friday May 7.
  • Production: your provider quotes 2 to 4 business days. Plan with the slow end, 4 days.
  • Shipping: standard US shipping quotes 3 to 6 business days. Plan with 6.
  • Result: working back from Friday May 7, the order must ship by Thursday April 29, so it must be placed by Friday April 23.

In this example the selling window closes 16 days before Mother's Day. Listings that went live on March 14, eight weeks out, get almost six weeks of real selling time. List two weeks before the holiday and you get none.

Three habits keep that date honest. Set your processing time on Etsy to match your provider's real production time, because Etsy uses it in the delivery estimate buyers see. Check your provider's holiday cut-off dates every autumn, since many providers announce longer production times in the end-of-year rush. And put the order-by date in your listing descriptions and shop announcement.

How to run the calendar each month

  1. Look 12 weeks ahead. At the start of each month, open the holiday calendar and note every event in the next three months, with its list-by date and rising keywords.
  2. Chart the main phrases. Run each event's key phrases through Etsy search trends with the 90-day window. A line that has started to climb means buyers are already looking; a flat line means you still have time.
  3. Check what is moving now. The Etsy trending searches board ranks phrases over 7, 14 and 30 days. A seasonal phrase climbing in the 7-day view is your cue to finish the batch.
  4. Pick themes worth the effort. The method in how to find a profitable Etsy niche works for holiday ideas too.
  5. Design and mock up the batch. Place each design on a tee, sweatshirt, mug or tote bag with the free mockup generator, so you can list without ordering a sample of every design. The mockups are AI renders, so check each one at full size.
  6. Publish by the start-listing date with the seasonal phrase near the start of the title and its variations in the tags.
  7. Watch the first two weeks and fix weak photos, titles or prices before the peak.
  8. Write down what sold after the event, so next year's batch starts from your own results.

After the season ends

Etsy listings stay active for four months and then renew automatically if auto-renew is on, at the US$0.20 listing fee (at the time of writing, 2026). For a purely seasonal listing, turn off auto-renew or deactivate it once the last order date passes, then bring it back a few weeks before next season with the photos, title and tags you already built. Confirm current amounts on Etsy's fees page.

Some designs can stay up all year. A "best mom ever" mug also sells for birthdays, and a fall sweatshirt can run from September to November. Move those to year-round phrases in the title and tags instead of switching them off.

Mistakes that cost a season

  • Planning from the holiday date instead of the last order date, so the batch goes live with no selling time left.
  • Starting the Christmas range in December, when many buyers are finishing their shopping and your listings have no history.
  • Using event names that are trademarks. Some big event names are registered trademarks, such as the name of the NFL's championship game. Use generic wording such as "game day", and never use team names or logos.

FAQ

When should I start listing Christmas items on Etsy?

As a planning rule, have Christmas listings live 10 to 12 weeks before December 25, which means early to mid-October. Starting in September gives each listing more time to collect views before the November rush. If you are later than that, list anyway and favor products your provider can make and ship quickly.

How far in advance should I list seasonal items on Etsy?

About 7 to 8 weeks for big gift days such as Mother's Day, 5 to 7 weeks for holidays where the item is worn on the day, and 10 to 12 weeks for long seasons like Halloween and Christmas. These are planning rules of thumb, not Etsy figures, so adjust them for your provider's production and shipping times.

What is the busiest season on Etsy?

For most gift shops, the stretch from Halloween through Christmas, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is the busiest of the year. Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and wedding season are also strong for personalized gifts.

What is the last day to order print on demand for Christmas delivery?

It depends on your provider and shipping method. Work back from the day you want the order to arrive: subtract the shipping time, then the production time, then a few days of buffer for the holiday rush. If your provider publishes an earlier holiday cut-off date, use theirs.

Should I delete seasonal listings after the holiday?

There is no need. Deactivate them or let them expire, then bring them back before next season so you keep the photos, title and tags you already built. Designs that work beyond the holiday can stay live with year-round keywords.
