The full Etsy category list as one searchable tree: find the right category for any product, expand each branch and copy the exact category path in one click.
Search by any word in a category or its parents. Open a branch to browse below it.
The Etsy Category List shows Etsy's complete category tree, from top-level departments such as Jewelry, Home & Living and Craft Supplies & Tools down to the most specific subcategory. Type a product word into the search box and the tree opens to every branch that contains it. Each entry carries its full path, for example Bags & Purses > Cosmetic & Toiletry Storage > Cosmetic Bags, and you can copy that path with one click.
When you create a listing, Etsy asks you to choose a category. That choice decides which attribute fields you can fill in, such as color, material or occasion, and where the item can appear when shoppers browse by department or narrow results with filters. A listing parked in a vague or mismatched category can miss those filtered searches entirely. Picking the most specific branch that truly describes the item gives Etsy a clearer picture of what you sell.
Say you sew embroidered makeup pouches. Searching cosmetic reveals a few possible homes, including the Cosmetic Bags subcategory under Bags & Purses. Choosing that branch over a general accessories category gives you attributes that suit a bag and places the pouch where people shopping for cosmetic bags actually browse. You copy the path into your product notes and move on to writing tags.
This Etsy categories list is a free board. It needs no account, you can search it as often as you like, and it follows the taxonomy Etsy uses for listings, so the paths you copy should line up with the choices you see in the listing editor.
The tree follows the way Etsy organizes its marketplace. The first level is a broad department, each level below narrows the product type, and the last level is the most specific category you can pick.
As a rule, choose the deepest category that accurately describes the item. If two branches seem to fit, go with the one a buyer would most likely browse, then cover the other angle with tags and attributes. If nothing matches closely, the product may be better described by a different noun, so try a synonym such as pouch instead of bag. Resist placing an item in an unrelated category to reach more shoppers; it confuses buyers and makes your listing harder for Etsy search to place.
